Painting Portraits:

Portrait paintings satisfy our deepest desire to look, past a fleeting moment, at another human being. In a sense, the art of portraiture acts as both a lens and mirror. We see what makes another individual unique and simultaneously experience our own humanity.

I believe portraiture can remind us of what we are missing—real people of unusual beauty, depth, and complexity. In fact, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that the necessity of perceiving other people, other cultures, and our shared humanity has ever been more important.

Biographical Notes:

Artist Brooke Walker-Knoblich was born in 1982 and graduated from the University of California, San Diego in 2005 with a BA in Studio Art.

During her junior year in Paris, France, she studied under the mentorship of renowned portraitist Kathy Burke. Many of her most memorable hours were spent painting Santerre's "Suzanne au Bain" in the Louvre.

Brooke Walker-Knoblich has won several awards in national juried competitions, including three Awards of Excellence, an Award of Honor and an Award of Merit. To view Brooke Walker-Knoblich's exhibition history please click here.

Brooke is a fifth generation Californian, raised in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. She currently lives and paints in Sacramento, CA where she teaches private art lessons from her studio in Midtown.
