Brooke Walker-Knoblich frequently works on commission and uses photographs for reference in her polished oil paintings. She prefers to take the photos herself. This not only allows Brooke artistic control of both the lighting and composition but to also interact with her subject. |
For her oil painting "Nathaniel" (above) Brooke Walker-Knoblich held a photography session in the living room of the family home. She chose to substitute the background activity for a simple tonal color. This artistic decision makes for a cleaner composition and focuses our attention on the young boy's engaged interaction with the viewer. |

Brooke understands that a photo session with her subject is not always possible. If a client already has a photo they would like to be painted, Brooke can work from this reference. She does ask that she be able to meet her subject in person to enable her to capture their spirit in paint. If the commission is a surprise gift, multiple photos that express the subject's personality may be provided in substitute of a personal meeting. |
For her painting "Creation" (above) Brooke Walker-Knoblich was unable to attend the private birth of Cordelia. Provided with a photo taken on the operating table by the new father, Brooke made artistic decisions in palette, simplified the distracting patterns on the baby blanket, and let the mother's hair flow. These changes focus our attention solely on the miraculous moment when the child reached out and touched her mother for the very first time. |
